Telford Innovation Centre tenants win Queen’s Award for Enterprise

Congratulations to our tenants – Scanning Pens on winning this prestigious award – well done!

Created in 2003 by Oxford Brookes graduates Jack S. Churchill (CEO) and Toby Sutton (COO), Scanning Pens is a dedicated EdTech company supplying text-to-speech devices to people with dyslexia, as well as raising awareness of dyslexia worldwide and supporting people whose daily lives are impacted by literacy differences.
Scanning Pens devices represent a huge quality-of-life change for neurodiverse people, and work by allowing users to scan through and listen to texts via an audio feedback system. Removing the need for in-person readers and modified texts, they make reading an independent act, and help people who struggle with reading able to engage with texts in the same way that a neurotypical person might. From working through a history exam or reading the latest bestsellers to the day-to-day admin tasks of running a business, their devices are designed to make reading accessible and simple, so that users can focus on what matters.
As a business, Scanning Pens have dedicated the past twelve months to supporting young people and adults with dyslexia and literacy differences who have been so affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. As well as offering free trials of their technology to schools, they now offer the same scheme to parents to try before they buy. Scanning Pens are fortunate and proud that the company has remained open for business and has continued expanding into territories such as the US, Australia and Canada as well as developing new markets in other countries all over the globe.
The Queen’s Award is appointed for sustained achievement by UK businesses in the categories of Innovation, International Trade, Sustainable Development, and Promoting Business via Social Mobility. Now in its 55th year, the programme is considered one of the highest awards for business in the country. Scanning Pens, too, are no stranger to the prestigious recognition of international business growth: in March 2021 the Department of International Trade recognised their outstanding international sales and named them Export Champions for the third year running. As a company they proactively reach out and encourage other businesses to become exporters. Socially distant living has created uncertain times in education that Scanning Pens continues to support people through.
The recognition of a dedicated assistive technology business by an office as prestigious as the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise is a statement on the growing worldwide commitment to accessibility. It also promotes a powerful message on how vital it is to consider inclusivity during a time when business and education are engaged in a rapid process of change and adapting to a very different set of global norms.

“To be recognised by the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise is the highest honour in business. We’re thrilled that our dedication to literacy and reading accessibility has been acknowledged in such a way that celebrates the commitment of everybody here at Scanning Pens.”

Solisco are changing the concept of Transportation

Solisco have been working hard to change the concept of transportation this year, bringing us the Smart Energy & Transportation Charging Hub (SETCH) project.

The aim of the project is to change the way charging points are deployed by creating an Eco-system of mutually- supportive sources of micro-generation and EV-charging demand rather than the standalone charging posts implemented historically.

After winning the Innovate UK & Office for Low Emission Vehicles competition in 2018, and working with local authorities and universities to solve the challenges of electric vehicle charging in public spaces, they carried out a feasibility study including pre-planning applications, site surveys, execution strategies, full design and planning as well as cost analysis within a three month period in order to birth the SETCH project.

EIC/ BTC Christmas Party

Tis The Season

Our annual Christmas party which took place on Thursday 12th Dec was a real delight with an assortment of Christmas treats.  A great opportunity to mingle with co-workers and tenants; it was also a chance to get to know people you don’t see everyday. An occasion full of laughs and smiles with great music, food and games like ‘Pin the Nose on Rudolph’.

Despite the initial hesitation, tenants had a blast trying to pin Rudolph’s nose and guessing the contents of Santa’s sack. Though most of us were far off the map with Rudolph’s nose, it was still great fun comparing the distance between all noses pinned, with some reaching the corners of the pages and the closest nose being very close to perfect!

Our winners didn’t go home empty handed! The best players got a chance to win some accolades and sweet treats like Quality Street and a Christmas hamper full of all the Christmas goodies that bring a smile to our festive faces. Some also came photo ready in fashionable Christmas jumpers, ready to rip the Christmas runway and win this year’s Best and Worst Christmas jumper competition.

This year’s Christmas jumpers were a real site to behold, some people settled for the cliché Christmas pieces and others decided to Up The Anti with full costumes, unusual designs and creative alternatives. We even had our very own walking Christmas tree which came in the form of a beard! The creativity presented this year led to two best jumper winners!

With 2019 coming to a close the E-Innovation team are wishing you a wonderful holiday season and a great start to the New Year.

Wild West Cookout for BTC Tenants!

There was a fine ol’ time had by all as the EIC & BTC Wild West cookout moseyed in to town on Thursday afternoon.

A regular treat for our tenants, the annual summer event is always one to look forward to, but this year we added a taste of the Frontier with themed food as well as a rodeo bull.

Despite a hesitant start with the bull, the tenants soon got into the swing of things, but with wildly varying results! Some were also decked in fancy dress, looking like they had just stepped off a plane from Texas, with rodeo skills to match, although it’s fair to say others are best off sticking to an office…

Well done to the prize winners for the day. They were:

Best time on Rodeo Bull – Jamie from The HSS (38.2 secs)

Best fancy dress – Eishpal from Round Software

Thanks to everyone that attended. See you next year!
